B: "She's not long term. Just someone to chill with."

B: "How about you? You've been seeing Heidi for a long time now. When are you going to tie the knot?"
A: "I don't know. She's been bugging me about marriage, but I don't see the need to rush it."
B: "You guys have been seeing each other for like 3 years haven't you?"
A: "Actually, it's been more than 4 years already."
B: "Wow. That's a long time. Any problems with having a girlfriend for that long?"
A: "Not really. It gets a little boring at times, but we grew to be great friends. I can totally be myself around her."
B: "I think that is the best type of relationships. Good for you."
A: "Well, if you put it that way."
B: "I would love to be in your situation. You have a beautiful girl that you are in love with, and you are perfect for each other. What else do you want?"
A: "Maybe a little more excitement."
B: "So would you give up your girlfriend for what I have? A little excitement here and there? You can't have both you know. Unless you're a cheating dog."
A: "I don't think I can go behind her back. We have a trusting relationship I don't want to risk."
B: "Now you're making some sense."

あっという間に12月、一年は早いですね。
今回は忘年会の会話をあげますので、それぞれで役割を演じてみてください。
昨年のラジオ英会話12月号を参考にしてます。


Eri:　　I love these year-end parties.
　　　 It's fun to enjoy tasty food and drinks with our co-workers.
Bob:　 I really enjoy them too.
　　　 Oh! And here's my favorite Japanese-style fried chicken.
　　 Let me just squeeze the lemon all over...
Eri: 　 Wait!
Bob: Hey, don't put your hand over the chicken.
　　　 What did you do that for?
Eri: 　 Because some people don't like lemon on it, and I'm one of them.
Bob:　 Oh, sorry.
　　　 I just assumed lemon goes on fried chicken automatically.
Eri : You should ask before you do it next time.
　　　Anyway, I don't worry about it.

*word and phrases
year-end party 年末のﾊﾟｰﾃｨｰ、忘年会。　squeeze 絞り出す。　co-workers 同僚。 assume 当然○○だと思う。

日本語訳例
Eri:　 私、こういう忘年会って大好きなの。職場の仲間と一緒においしいものを食べたり（お酒を）飲んだりするのって楽しいわ。
Bob:　僕もとても好きだよ。ああ！僕の好物のから揚げ（和風フライドチキン）があるよ。僕にその上からレモンを絞らせて...
Eri: 　待って！
Bob: ちょっと、から揚げの上に手をかざさないでくれるかい。なぜそんなことをするんだい？
Eri:　レモンをかけるのが好きじゃない人もいるし。私もその一人だからよ。
Bob: そうか、ごめん。　僕は当然、レモンは鶏のから揚げによく合うものだと思ったんだ。
Eri: 　次にそうするときは、あらかじめ尋ねるべきね。とにかく、気にしないで。

私はレモン絞りにこだわりはありませんが、皆さんはどうですか？
忘年会やクリスマスパーティで出される好きな食べものなどについても話しましょう。

今年も余すところあと1か月。今日は英会話文に親しみましょう。

Ariel: Is everything OK? You’ve been on pins and needles all day.
Jonathan: It’s fine… I’m sure it’s nothing.
Ariel: Come out with it.
Jonathan: Well, I’ve just have a sneaking suspicion something bad is going to happen.
Ariel: Really? Why?
Jonathan: I’m not sure. It’s just a feeling, really…
Ariel: Well, what do you think it is?
Jonathan: I don’t know—Oh no! I left my clothes out to dry!
Ariel: Uh oh, that’s not good! It’s supposed to start raining soon. We better make a break for it if you want to save your clothes.
Jonathan: Yeah, let’s go!

キーフレーズ

“on pins and needles”　心配で落ち着かない   この表現は心配や興奮などで人がそわそわしている状態を意味し、特に結果や知らせなどを待っているような状況でよく使われます。元々は脚などがしびれたときのピリピリする感覚に対して使われていましたが、そこから転じてこのような意味で使われるようになった表現です。

 “come out with”　～を口に出して言う    この表現は計画や秘密、意思などを口に出したり、打ち明けたりすることを意味し、特に相手が聞きたがっていることを伝える場合によく使われます。命令形で用いて、相手に打ち明けるよう促す際に使われることが多いフレーズです。

 “sneaking suspicion”　漠然とした予感　　この表現は特に根拠のない予感や虫の知らせなどを意味します。“sneaking”は、元々はこっそり、ひそかに動く様子を表す言葉ですが、感情などに対して用いると、恥ずかしくて人には知られたくないことや、そうした感情などに確信が持てないことを意味することになります。

 “make a break for it”　急いで駆け出す 　　今いる場所から逃げ出したり、ある場所に向かうために突然駆け出すことを意味し、通常は急ぐことによって、好ましい結果になるような場合に使われる表現です。ここで使われている“break”は「逃げること」という意味ですが、フレーズ全体としては、何かから逃げ出す場合だけではなく、どこかに向かって急いで走り出す状況でも使われます。

みなさん、こんばんは！
次回のセッションでは、”please”の言い換え表現を中心にして、会話表現を一緒に勉強しましょう。
英単語でもそうですが、同じような意味を持つ単語や表現（同義語と呼ばれますね）を覚えるようにすると、単語選びのレパートリーが広がり、英語力も飛躍的にアップします。
皆さんが英会話ですぐに使えるよう、実践的な会話表現を中心に取り上げたいと思います。

【例文】
(1) Can you pass me chopsticks if you would be so kind?
(2) We will start to talk about this, if you don’t mind.
(3) I’d love it if you could come back to Japan in the future.

秋晴れの一日、天皇皇后のパレードも無事に終わり、新しい時代の幕が開けましたね。それとは関係ないのですが少し前にYESTERDAYという映画を見ました。
売れないミュージシャン（男性）が、自転車走行中に車にぶつかり、病院で目が覚めたら、何故かビートルズの存在しない世界になっていたので、彼はビートルズの曲を自作の曲として歌い、一躍人気が出ますが、自分の曲とウソをついていることに罪悪感を感じて・・・という話で、けっこう面白かったです。
そこで、今回は、ビートルズのYesterdayを取り上げてみたいと思います。ほかにあなたの好きな曲があればぜひ教えてください。

O: The problem was explained to HR, and it’s being taken care of. You’ll hear from them shortly.
B: What a relief!
O: Now, on an entirely different subject, some of us are going to go have a drink after work. Would you care to join us?
B: Oh, actually, I don’t touch alcohol, I mean, I don’t drink. If I have even a drop of wine, I get dizzy.
O: Don’t worry. We’ve all grown out of binge drinking. You can drink whatever you like. And at your own pace.
B: Who’s coming?
O: People around our age. Nobody from management. It’s nothing more than a chatty evening with friends, prattling on about who’s who, and who does what in the company, and other stuff like that. But you do learn something at times, I must say.
B: Sounds interesting. Okay, count me in.
O: Right. We meet at the employee’s entrance at 7:30.
B: Fine. See you later.

今週は　普段よく使う「形容詞」のなかでも自分の気持ちの表現または人の性格を表現する言葉をピックアップしてみます。　言いたくても咄嗟に英語が出てこない場合が結構ありますね。

このマテリアルでピックアップした表現以外に「私ならこういう表現をする」という案を歓迎します
Andy の意見もぜひ聞いてみましょう。

１　「かわいい」　頻繁に使われる表現で英語圏でもkawaiiは使われるようになってきていますが、ざっと挙げてみてもこんなにあると思います。皆さんはどれをよく使いますか。
Cute sweet nice gentle charming darling precious lovable adorable　

２　ケチ　　まず思い浮かべるのは　stingy でしょうか。
Please don’t be stingy It’s embarrassing,　恥ずかしいからケチなことしないで
I’m not cheap. I just don’t like wasting money ケチじゃなく節約家なんだ
She is such a cheapskate. 本当にケチだ

３　優柔不断　　indecisive wishy-washy
He is so indecisive! He can never decide on which shop to go to.
